Onycha (Benzoin) Resin Oil
Scientific Name: Styrax tonkinensis
Country of Origin: Indonesia

We are now offering Onycha (Benzoin) in an resin oil form. Although, we personally believe Onycha is the operculum of a shell fish from the Red Sea, there are many who believe it is an oil obtained from a plant species. There is much controversy over this ingredient and some also believe it is cistus or labdanum.
Please note: This is a resin absolute and it will not dissolve in water or readily with carrier oils. It is very thick and will need to be heated gently and may need to be infused into carrier oils or tinctured into an alcohol base. Finished products may need to be filtered.
Styrax Benzoin has a balsamic vanilla tone and is different than our Stacte or Storax.
Important: Styrax Benzoin is not suitable to be taken internally. There has been some information on the internet stating it has internal medicinal benefits. Styrax Benzoin is solvent extracted and is NOT suitable for internal use.

Easton's Bible Dictionary
Onycha a nail; claw; hoof, (Heb. sheheleth; Exodus 30:34), a Latin word applied to the operculum, i.e., the claw or nail of the strombus or wing-shell, a univalve common in the Red Sea. The opercula of these shell-fish when burned emit a strong odour "like castoreum." This was an ingredient in the sacred incense.
